Our project aims to enhance the understanding and use of virtual embodiment in collaborative creative
processes. The goal is to reduce travel in the creative industries while promoting global perspectives and
fostering international collaborations to enrich media art and performance. Disseminating project findings
widely, through platforms like the Journal for Artistic Research, is crucial. This will help establish a
protocol for media and performing artists engaging in VR and co-creation, building on research like
WAVE and MAGICS. The project will serve as a springboard for a larger, scalable effort to include
collaborators across continents.
RQ 1: How can collaborative processes of developing choreography with the use of XR technologies look? RQ 2:
What affordances do XR technologies have for developing choreography for online, physical, and hybrid
performances? RQ 3: How can artists interact with a live audience on site and through XR technologies to create a
local and trans-national sense of community?
We will conduct a case study using artistic methods from dance/choreography and media arts. By co-creating
choreography for two dancers and multiple avatars in an environment experienced live or in VR, we will explore
which creative methods work within that framework. The case study lets us test various approaches to XR
technologies for live performance. For audience interaction at live events, we build on WAVE – anticipatory
movement visualization for audience interaction in VR, a method developed at Aalto University, and explore how
we might trigger waves of audience movement in physical space and VR, as response or counterpoint to the
performance.
