Check out our introduction-video on how to use Oria. Note, the video is in Norwegian.

Simple search

The search box in Oria works a bit like a Google search. You can enter the information you have about the document you are looking for, or combine keywords for the topic you are interested in.

In the drop-down menu to the left of the search field, select which "collection" you want to search in, i.e. in Kristiania University College (standard), Norwegian academic libraries or in HK digital, which are the university college's electronic documents.

Too many hits?

If you get too many hits, you can refine your search with the filters on the right, e.g. under "Material type", choose to display only books or articles, or under "Language" choose the desired language, etc. Note that these choices are cancelled when you do a new search. If you want to continue searching for e.g. printed books in Norwegian, you can lock the selections with the padlock (Remember all filters).

If you enter multiple keywords, you will get hits on documents that contain all the keywords. In this way, you can refine your search to fewer and more relevant matches. For example, when searching for a particular book, it is a good idea to enter both the last name of the author and a few words from the title.

You can use quotation marks to delimit a specific phrase, such as "measurement instruments". Then you will avoid documents where the terms "measurement" and "instruments" appear separately.

Too few hits?

If you do not get relevant results, you may want to reformulate your search:

- are there synonyms for the term you have used?
- can you use fewer keywords?
- are there more general terms for what you are interested in?

Truncating can also yield multiple hits – to do this put an asterisk (*) behind the stem of the word. This will produce hits with the stem of the word with different endings. For example, instrument* will generate hits with instrument, instruments, instrumentation, instrumentalist, etc.

You may also want to select "Norwegian academic libraries" in the drop-down menu at the top left. Other libraries may have the document you are looking for. Then an interlibrary loan can be ordered.

Advanced search

You can also choose to use Advanced Search on the right side of the search box. Remember to also choose here whether you only want hits from the college library, HK digital or expand to Norwegian academic libraries.

With advanced search, you can combine different fields such as title, author, subject, ISBN, etc. together with AND, OR, NOT and other delimitations.

Not found?

You have another option if the book you are looking for is not available in either Kristiania University College or the Norwegian academic library. Click on the "Not found?" tab and fill out the form to order it.

The tabs at the top

At the top of the Oria page you will find several tabs, where you can search for or browse in an alphabetical list of electronic journals, databases and resources and tools.

You can also find many more search tips and techniques at Search & Write.

Ask one of the librarians or send an e-mail to biblioteket@kristiania.no if you do not get a reference or if you have any other questions about Oria.
