1. Purpose
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure the lawful, ethical, and secure use of artificial intelligence (AI) at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences in accordance with Norwegian legislation. The guidelines are intended to safeguard academic quality, academic integrity, and privacy in research and educational activities. This includes research, student work, and the use of artificial intelligence in lectures, learning materials, and other academic work.
In addition, Kristiania University of Applied Sciences seeks to facilitate innovation and the use of digital and technological tools, without relieving individuals of their responsibility to use these tools thoughtfully and critically.
All use of artificial intelligence in academia must be assessed in light of established research ethics practices, as outlined in Chapter 3 of these guidelines.
1.2 Definition
Kristiania University of Applied Sciences refers to the definition of AI systems provided in the summary of the AI Act by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. In brief, and as further explained in Section 1.3 of the summary, an AI tool is defined as follows:
AI systems are computer-based systems that, to some extent, perform tasks autonomously, meaning without direct human intervention. AI systems also possess a certain capacity to adapt after deployment. This may occur, for example, when language models provide increasingly accurate responses to prompts as they become better at recognizing relationships between words (adaptability).
Furthermore, AI systems can transform the data they receive (input), such as training data and prompts, into new forms of data (output). Outputs generated by AI systems may include predictions, recommendations, or decisions. (Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, 2026)
1.3 Target Audience
These guidelines apply to students and employees affiliated with Kristiania University of Applied Sciences who engage in research, education, or artistic research and development activities.
1.4 Which AI Tools Are Covered by These Guidelines?
Kristiania University of Applied Sciences' AI guidelines apply to the use of all AI tools, regardless of whether the university has an agreement with the provider. The guidelines focus on how the AI tool has been used, rather than which AI tool has been used, in connection with academic work carried out as part of your affiliation with Kristiania University of Applied Sciences.
The university has agreements with selected providers to make AI tools more accessible while ensuring user privacy and data security. Employees and students are encouraged to use AI tools covered by such agreements. However, these guidelines must also be followed when using AI tools for which the university does not have an agreement.
In many cases, additional guidelines and/or legal requirements may restrict what information may be processed and for what purposes AI tools may be used. Such restrictions may relate to the processing of personal data, information security, copyright, and other legal considerations. Users are responsible for ensuring that their use of AI tools complies with all relevant guidelines and applicable Norwegian legislation.
At Kristiania, the Data Storage Guide (Lagringsguiden) determines which AI tools are approved for processing different categories of information. This concerns data and information security and is particularly important when processing personal data or other sensitive information.

2. Norwegian Law and the Use of Artificial Intelligence
Kristiania University of Applied Sciences’ guidelines for the use of AI do not override applicable Norwegian laws, regulations, or statutory requirements.
2.1 Cheating or Attempted Cheating
Actions or circumstances that give a student an unfair advantage during an examination, or that result in a student's knowledge or skills not being assessed in a sound academic manner, are considered cheating or attempted cheating (Regulations concerning admission, courses of study, degrees and examinations at Kristiania University College, 2025).
When AI tools are used in student work and assessments, such use must always comply with applicable regulations.

2.1.1 Unauthorized Aids
Sections a and b of § 4-9 of the Regulations concerning admission, courses of study, degrees and examinations at Kristiania University College (2025) state that acting contrary to the rules applicable to a particular examination, or using unauthorized aids, may be regarded as cheating or attempted cheating.
The aids permitted for each examination are specified in the course description for the relevant course (2025, § 4-6).
2.1.2 Plagiarism and Inadequate or Incorrect Referencing
Sections c, d and e of § 4-9 of the Regulations concerning admission, courses of study, degrees and examinations at Kristiania University College (2025) describe various actions that may be considered plagiarism. Submitting work or an assignment that has not been produced by oneself while presenting it as one's own work constitutes plagiarism and may be regarded as cheating or attempted cheating.
Inadequate or incorrect referencing may also be considered cheating or attempted cheating. Where AI tools have been used to modify reference lists or citations, the student remains responsible for verifying the accuracy and quality of any changes made by the AI tool.
2.2 Sharing Personal Data and Other Data with AI Tools
The processing of personal data must always comply with the Norwegian Personal Data Act (2018) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Each employee and student is responsible for ensuring that their use of AI tools does not violate applicable legislation. Please note that information may also be subject to contractual confidentiality obligations and statutory duties of confidentiality.
The sharing of personal data and other sensitive information with AI tools must always be carried out in accordance with Kristiania University of Applied Sciences’ Data Storage Guide (Lagringsguiden), which provides an overview of approved services and tools for different categories of data.

2.3 Uploading Copyright-Protected Material
Several legal provisions and agreements must be considered when sharing copyright-protected material, including the Norwegian Copyright Act (Åndsverksloven, 2018) and the agreement with Kopinor (Kopinor, 2025). As the legal framework can be complex and difficult to interpret, it is generally best not to upload material if you are uncertain whether you have the right to do so.
Material may only be uploaded if you have explicit permission to share it or if it is covered by a licence that permits sharing with AI tools. Whether material may legally be shared is not determined by the licence or agreement governing the AI tool itself, but by the licence, agreement, or rights associated with the material you wish to share.
Course coordinators and instructors may contact the Library at biblioteket@kristiania.no for assistance in assessing whether course literature and other materials may be shared with AI assistants or agents made available to students.
3. Use of AI and Research Ethics Principles
All use of AI tools must be carried out in accordance with Norwegian legislation and the principles of transparency, integrity, and accountability.

3.1 Transparency and Integrity
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in research projects requires researchers to uphold good scientific practice, maintain independence, and take responsibility for transparency, privacy, data quality, and the avoidance of hidden algorithmic bias. Researchers are responsible for familiarizing themselves with relevant legislation, regulations, and guidelines.
When AI tools are used in student work, students must disclose such use in an open and transparent manner. Students are expected to write their own texts in their entirety. If a student's use of AI has resulted in extensive rewriting to such an extent that parts of the text can no longer reasonably be considered the student's own writing, the student must evaluate whether the work meets the formal requirements of the assignment and complies with the Regulations concerning admission, courses of study, degrees and examinations at Kristiania University College (2025).
If required by the course coordinator, students may document their use of AI by describing both the use of the tool and their reflections on its use within the text of the assignment itself. In addition, if requested by the course coordinator, a declaration of AI use must be submitted together with the assignment.
Students are responsible for ensuring that all submitted work complies with formal requirements, applicable legislation, and relevant guidelines.
3.2 Correct Referencing and Best Practice
You should not cite sources that you have not read yourself. This means that if you have only read an AI-generated summary of a text, you should not cite the original text, as you have not actually read it. Best practice when using AI as a reading assistant is to read the original source in addition to the AI-generated summary.
AI tools are not citable, verifiable, or quality-assured sources of definitions, claims, or factual information.
In cases where AI-generated content is copied or used directly, such as illustrations, text, or similar material, it should be cited and referenced according to the appropriate referencing style.

3.3 Critical Use and Quality Assurance
There is always a risk that generative AI tools may hallucinate, meaning they may generate inaccurate or fabricated information. Large language models are trained on vast amounts of data and generate responses based on probability rather than an understanding of what is true or false (Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, 2026, pp. 12-13).
Responsibility for verifying and quality-assuring information always rests with the student or employee using the tool.
3.4 Seek Clarification
Employees and students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the applicable formal requirements.
If there is any uncertainty regarding the use of AI, clarification should be sought by contacting the course coordinator, relevant support services, or the Library.
4. Ethical Considerations
4.1 Environment and Sustainability
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights both the positive and negative impacts of artificial intelligence in relation to the environment and sustainability (2025). AI systems require significant resources, both for the construction and production of data centres and for their ongoing operation.
Students and employees should make a considered assessment of whether the use of an AI tool is necessary to achieve a satisfactory outcome when carrying out a task.
4.2 Responsibility for One's Own Learning
Students who use AI tools must make a thoughtful and critical assessment of whether such use will support or hinder their own learning outcomes.
There are ways to use AI tools that can enhance the efficiency of student work while still supporting meaningful learning and academic development.
5. Non-Compliance with These Guidelines
Improper use of artificial intelligence may, depending on the nature and severity of the misuse, lead to suspicion of cheating, annulment of an assessment, or, in the most serious cases, suspension or expulsion.
In cases involving research, serious breaches may be handled as violations of research ethics or as research misconduct.
Students and employees are expected to stay informed about the applicable formal requirements and regulations governing the use of AI in all work they undertake.
