Install GlobalProtect on Mac

For GlobalProtect to work, you must approve system extensions in macOS during installation. If you skip this step, the VPN will not function correctly.

This guide is based on macOS 13 Ventura and newer. Things can be slightly different in other versions, but the process is the same.

Step-by-Step

  1. Download the installation file:
    GlobalProtect for Mac

  2. Open the file:
When the download is complete, double-click the file to open it.
If the file does not open normally, see Troubleshooting.

  3. Install the program:
    • Follow the installation wizard.
    • Check the box for GlobalProtect System Extensions when prompted.
    • Enter your Mac password when asked.

  4. Approve system extensions:
If you see the message “System Extension Blocked”, do the following:
    • Click Open Privacy & Security.
    • At the bottom of the Privacy & Security pane, click Allow next to:
“System software from developer Palo Alto Networks was blocked.”
    • Close System Preferences.
  5. Complete the installation:
Click Close when the installation finishes.

  6. Connect to VPN:
    • Click the GlobalProtect icon (a small globe) in the menu bar.
    • Enter the portal address:
      vpnstudent.kristiania.no
    • Click Connect.
    • Log in with your school account:
      Username: [your username]@egms.no
      Password: [your password]

If GlobalProtect gets stuck on “Connecting…”, see Troubleshooting.

  7. Allow network filtering:
If you see the message “GlobalProtect will filter network content”, click Allow.
  8. Confirm connection:
When connected, the globe icon turns black with a shield.
    To disconnect, click Disconnect.

Uninstall GlobalProtect on Mac

  • Download the same installation file as before.
  • Open the file and select Uninstall GlobalProtect instead of Install.
  • Complete the uninstallation.

Troubleshooting

Stuck on “Connecting…”

Cause:
You likely did not approve the system extension during installation.

Solution:

  • If it’s been less than 30 minutes since installation:
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Allow.
  • If it’s been more than 30 minutes:
Uninstall GlobalProtect and reinstall, making sure to approve the system extension.

File has a “.z” extension and won’t open

Cause:
This is a random issue that can occur when downloading on Mac.

Solution:

  • Clear your browser cache and download again.
  • Alternatively, use Private Browsing/Incognito Mode and download the file there.
  • If that doesn’t work, you can rename the file extension from .z to .pkg and then open it as usual.
