Re-sit Exams and Deferred Exams

Did your exam go poorly, or were you unable to attend? Don’t worry! Here is an overview of everything you need to know about re-sit exams and deferred exams.

What are re-sit exams and deferred exams?

“Konte” in Norwegian is slang for taking a re-sit examination, meaning you take the exam again.

This is available if you did not pass the exam, want to improve your grade, or were unable to submit the exam for any reason. At Kristiania, students who receive a grade lower than A may take a re-sit exam.

A deferred exam is arranged for students who had valid absence during the exam. Deferred exams and re-sit exams are held at the same time.

For online students, there are no separate deferred or re-sit exams, since exams in all online courses are held every semester. Online students who want a deferred or re-sit exam register for the next ordinary exam in the course.

Prepare well for your re-sit exam and make sure the extra effort is worth it.

Before you take a re-sit exam

Before taking a re-sit exam, it may be useful to request a grade explanation. This can give you insight into what led to the lower grade and offer tips on what to improve when taking the exam again.

You may also appeal your exam grade but remember that an appeal can go both ways. You may end up with a lower grade than you originally received.

  • Note: Appealing a grade and registering for a re-sit exam are two separate processes. There is no guarantee that you will receive the result of your appeal before the deadline to register or withdraw from the re-sit exam. If you do not withdraw before the deadline, you must pay the exam fee.

Grades on re-sit exams

If you take a re-sit exam, the best grade will always be the one that counts, even if the re-sit grade is lower than the original grade.

If you take a re-sit exam before your diploma is produced, you may request that the production of your diploma be postponed until the re-sit grade is available. Read more about postponing your diploma.

When can you take a re-sit exam?

One advantage of studying at Kristiania is that re-sit exams are organized in dedicated weeks.

  • Re-sit exams for autumn courses are held in weeks 8 and 9, with associated weekends. Many exams start as early as Friday in week 7.
  • Re-sit exams for spring courses are held in weeks 32 and 33, with associated weekends. Many exams start as early as Friday in week 31.

Some courses have re-sits together with the ordinary exam. This is stated in the course description and follows the same registration deadlines as the ordinary exam.

Courses offered in both spring and autumn can be held in both re-sit periods. Re-sits for bachelor’s and master’s theses follow the next ordinary exam period.

You can find information about which semester the course was taken in the course description. You can find course descriptions through the Study Portal at kristiania.no.

If you want to take re-sit exams in several courses during the same period, you are responsible for checking whether the exam dates overlap. If they do, you must choose which exam to take this time and withdraw from the other.

Deferred and re-sit home exams are often held during the weekends connected to the re-sit weeks.

How do I register or withdraw from a re-sit exam?

Registration and withdrawal periods:

  • Autumn courses: 11 January – 1 February
  • Spring courses: 19 June – 10 July
  • Bachelor’s and master’s theses: 10 September – 1 October

If the re-sit is held during the ordinary exam period, the same deadlines apply as for ordinary exam registration.

Exam dates for re-sit exams become available in Studentweb when you register. The deadlines for registration and withdrawal apply regardless of ongoing grade appeals. If you receive the result of an appeal after the withdrawal deadline, you cannot withdraw from the exam.

How to register:

  1. Log in to Studentweb, click “Active courses” in the menu, and search for the course code of the course you want to re-sit.
  2. Exams with a re-sit will have a “Select” button. Click it. A second button will appear to confirm your registration. Once completed, you are registered for the entire course. If the course has multiple exam components and you only want to take one, you must withdraw from the others.
  3. You will find the time and place for the exam in Studentweb well before it is held.

Important: When registering for a re-sit exam, you register for the entire course, not just one exam component.

Registration for active students is done through Studentweb and becomes binding once the deadline has passed. The exam dates for the re-sit exam will be available in your Studentweb when you register for the re-sit.

Did you not pass on your coursework requirements?

If you have not passed coursework requirements, you cannot register via Studentweb. Instead, you must register using the form for former students (see below).

Former students: How do I take a re-sit exam?

If you no longer have access to Studentweb, register via the form for former students (available only during the registration period).

This form is only for former students, students who have not passed coursework requirements, or students who have technical issues with Studentweb.

Your registration will appear in Studentweb within one week and no later than the registration deadline.

Where do I find the exam format?

For re-sit exams, the most recent course description applies. The course description explains how the ordinary exam is conducted and how the re-sit exam is arranged.

Re-sit exams may differ from the ordinary exam. Re-sit exams are always individual, even if the ordinary exam was a group exam.

Important: You are responsible for checking the assessment format and requirements. If you originally took the course before the current course description, the course may now include coursework requirements that you must complete.

You can find course descriptions through the Study Portal at kristiania.no.

Re-taking coursework requirements

Students who did not pass the coursework requirements during the ordinary course period are withdrawn from the exam and must register for the re-sit exam via the form for former students.

The re-sit exam then counts as the first exam attempt. Re-taking coursework requirements is free of charge. Coursework requirements must be completed and approved in week 6 for autumn courses and in week 30 for spring courses.

What does a re-sit or deferred exam cost?

Re-sit exam: You will be charged a fee. A digital invoice is sent by email after the exam.

The fee applies per exam, not per course.

Deferred exam: Students with valid absence take the deferred exam free of charge.
