Background

Jon Martin Larsen’s research focuses largely on rhetoric, crisis and risk communication, strategic communication, quality of life, citizenship, participation, community, and social inclusion, with an emphasis on contributing to organizational development, innovation, and new leadership. He employs mixed research methods, including action research, and transformative research.

Through action research together with youth, adults, elders, minorities, municipalities and support services, Larsen investigates how trust, dialogue and participation can make welfare services more accessible to those who are most easily overlooked. He explores what happens when people encounter systems and institutions that are supposed to give them security, and why some still stay silent and absent because they do not experience them as safe.

He was also project leader on the first national study on the working environment for queer students and staff in Norwegian academia and working conditions for queer research in Norway, and produced a guide towards inclusion of gender and sexual diversity in academia.

Larsen is also an assistant professor in journalism and lectures journalism, communication and social studies. He is a course coordinator for political journalism and commentary, and give special training in war and conflict journalism as he is the author of a guide for constructive war and conflict journalism.

Larsen has been associated with Kristiania and its predecessors for over twenty-five years and has taught in Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim alongside other full-time work in a number of Norwegian newsrooms and international humanitarian organizations. He has a master's degree in international journalism from Cardiff University from 2007 and wrote a master's thesis on how terror, migration and minorities affect the Turkish identity and the Turkish state.

Larsen is coordinator for the Norwegian Queer Research Group, member of Kristiania’s research groups on worklife, inclusion and diersoty, member of Kristianias research group on communication, a team member of Kristiania’s Societal Security Research Center and a member of the Nordic Research Network on Queer Aging.
