Library Course: Literature Searching for Theoretical Assignments and Literature Reviews
A systematic literature search is a method of conducting literature searches in a way that makes the process transparent and reproducible. Because the search process can be reproduced and verified, systematic literature searches can be used as a research method in scientific and evidence-based work. For a search to be considered systematic and reproducible, several key steps in the process must be followed.
- The search must be planned
- The search strategy must be tested and revised
- The search must be conducted as planned
- Screening of the results
- The search process must be documented
In this course, we will go through these steps, explain what they involve, and help you get started with your work.
After completing this course, you will have learned:
- How to begin with exploratory searches to identify effective search terms
- How to create a search framework (e.g. PICO)
- How to find controlled vocabulary and subject headings
- Where to find relevant bibliographic databases for your topic
- How to evaluate the relevance and quality of articles
- What documentation is required for your assignment
The course will be held on campus in Oslo and online for students in Bergen and online students.
