Important information:
If you are a Norwegian citizen but you studied abroad, you need to use the regular application form.

- Admission to master's programmes at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences requires a minimum grade average equivalent to a Norwegian C (CGPA 2,7) in your bachelor's degree. A Norwegian C grade is generally comparable to an American B minus grade. When calculating your CGPA we use a grade equivalent system to find out what your grade is comparable to in the ECTS. All international applicants with foreign education are assessed individually during the admission process.
- As a general requirement for admission to master’s programmes in English, all applicants must document proficiency in English on advanced level through an international test, recognized by Kristiania University of Applied Sciences. We do not offer any preparatory courses in English. Exemptions from the English language requirement are limited. For more information, please contact admission@kristiania.no
- Applicants who are required to apply for a student residence permit in order to study in Norway must submit all required documents before the deadline April 15th. The deadline for uploading documentation for international applicants who are not required to apply for a student residence permit is July 1st (bachelor) and July 15th (master).
- Incomplete applications will be rejected regardless of academic qualifications. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit a complete application within the deadline.
- Once you qualify for admission you will need to accept or decline the offer of admission through the application portal "Mitt Kristiania" within the given deadline.
- If you do not have a Norwegian social security number (or D-number) you need to apply as an international applicant.
Bachelor programmes
- Higher Education Entrance Qualification. View the GSU-list to find the requirements that apply to you.
Proficiency in English must be documented with a valid test, listed under “English Language Requirements for International Applicants”. - Additional requirement for certain Bachelor programmes: Passing grade in mathematics equivalent to Norwegian Mathematics R1 or S1+S2 (scientific Mathematics from Upper secondary school).
- Copy of passport/ Norwegian residency permit.
- For non-EU/EEA applicants who are residing outside Norway: Documentation of sufficient funds to cover living expenses and tuition fees. This can be documented with one of the following:
- a recent official bank statement in your own name
- a letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country
- a sponsor’s guarantee letter and sponsor's recent official bank statement
The amount required for one academic year is tuition and sufficient funds to cover living expenses in Norway for one academic year (NOK 166 859). Find the tuition fee for the programme you are applying for on our web pages. The amount may be documented in any currency.Note that this will later be an essential part of the student residence permit application. Immediately after receiving an offer of admission, international students are requested to transfer this amount to a student deposit account held by Kristiania University of Applied Sciences.
Master programmes
- Complete bachelor diploma and transcript confirming that you have achieved equivalent to 180 ECTS. The Grade Point Average (CGPA) from your bachelor’s degree must be comparable to a Norwegian C (CGPA 2,7). The Norwegian C is generally comparable to an American B minus. When calculating your CGPA we use a grade equivalent system to find out what your grade is comparable to in ECTS. All international applicants with foreign education are assessed individually during the admission process.
- Secondary school certificate/High School diploma
- Letter of motivation, approximately 500 words.
- IELTS test (total score 6.5) or TOEFL test (total score 98). Exemptions from the English language requirement are limited. For more information please contact admission@kristiania.no
- Copy of passport/ Norwegian residency permit.
- For non-EU/EEA applicants who are residing outside Norway: Documentation of sufficient funds to cover living expenses in Norway. This can be documented with one of the following:
- a recent official bank statement in your own name
- a letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country
- a sponsor’s guarantee letter and sponsor's recent official bank statement

English language tests should not be older than two years at time of the application deadline.
Exemptions from the test
- Applicants who have completed at least one-year studies at high school or university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK, USA or New Zealand. The place of instruction must have been in one of these countries and the language of instruction must have been English.
- Applicants who have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree with English as the language of instruction in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden.
- Applicants who have completed and passed English course (140 hours per year / 5 hours per week) at the Norwegian upper secondary school, with a minimum grade of 4.
- Applicants who have English as "language 1" or "language 2" on European Baccalaureate Diploma (EB).
- Applicants who have completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma/Certificate (IB)
- Your citizenship determines if you need to apply for a student residence permit in order to study in Norway. Please refer to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for information about what applies to you.
Citizens from EU/EEA – Registration with the police
Students with EU/EEA citizenship need to register with the Oslo Police Department within 3 months after their arrival in Norway. Please note that this is not possible until you have arrived in Norway. You need to book an appointment beforehand in the UDI Application Portal to register with the police. You must book the next available appointment even if you have already started your studies in Norway.
EU/EEA citizens who are staying in Norway for more than 6 months must register a move to Norway through the Tax Administration at SUA – Service centre for foreign workers. You can register a move before the appointment with the Oslo Police Department.
Citizens from EU/EEA countries who plan to stay in Norway for a period shorter than 90 days do not need to register their stay.
Nordic citizens do not have to register with the Police after arriving in Norway. If you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months, you must book an appointment at the Tax Administration to report a move to Norway.
Citizens from Non-EU/EEA countries
Citizens from non-EU/EEA countries need to apply for a student residence permit in order to study in Norway.
When applying to a Master's programme at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences, non-EU/EEA citizens who are residing outside Norway, must document that they have sufficient funds to cover living expenses and tuition fees. This can be documented with one of the following:
- a recent official bank statement in your own name
- a letter confirming that you are eligible for a scholarship/student loan from your home country
- a sponsor guarantee letter and sponsor's recent official bank statement
The amount required for one academic year is tuition and sufficient funds to cover living expenses in Norway for one academic year (NOK 166 859). Find the tuition fee for the programme you are applying for on our web pages. The amount may be documented in any currency.This will later be an essential part of the student residence permit application. Immediately after receiving admission, international applicants are requested to transfer this amount to a student deposit account held by Kristiania University of Applied Sciences. Information about the student residence permit is available at the UDI's website. Processing time may take 7-8 weeks.
- In order for the student residence permit application to be processed by the UDI before the start of the semester (August), all required documentation must be uploaded to “Mitt Kristiania” within the deadline April 15th. Unfortunately, we are unable to extend the deadline or issue conditional offers of admission. This is due to the regulations set by the immigration authorities.
You can expect to receive the offer of admission by the end of April if you have completed your application and are qualified for admission within the deadline April 15th. Immediately after receiving admission, non-EU/EEA citizens need to apply for a student residence permit at the UDI.
As a part of the student residence permit application, the required amount (both tuition fee for one academic year and living expenses) must be deposited in a Norwegian bank account as UDI requires financial guarantee for studies in Norway. It is not possible to open a bank account in Norway prior to arrival. Therefore, Kristiania University of Applied Sciences has an account where the required amount can be deposited. Details about how to transfer the deposit will be available after receiving admission.
Please note that once the amount is transferred to our deposit account, you will receive an admission letter to upload in your residence permit application at the UDI, confirming that you have received admission and transferred the required funds. We recommend to transferring this amount prior to July 1st as applications to the UDI submitted within this date will be processed in time for the semester start in August. If we receive the funds after this date, it is no longer possible to guarantee that your residence permit will be processed in time for the semester start.
Arriving in Norway
If granted a student residence permit, you are required to register and book and appointment with the police as soon as possible after arriving in Norway. You need to make an appointment beforehand through the UDI Online portal. Select Oslo Police District, Department of Immigration.
After the police registration, you will receive a residence card and Norwegian ID number by mail. The residence permit is usually valid for one year and must be renewed for the second year of studies. When you are granted a student residence permit in Norway, you are automatically also granted permission to work up to 20 hours per week and full-time during ordinary holidays.
Once you have received your Norwegian ID number you can open your bank account in Norway and Kristiania University of Applied Sciences will transfer your deposit money to your account. The money will be transferred back to you once you open a Norwegian bank account. For us to be able to refund your deposit you need to personally visit our
financial department with a signed letter with your bank account information. The letter must contain your student ID number, full name, address, and account number. If your student residence permit is not granted or if you withdraw before the deadline specified in your student contract, the funds you deposited will be refunded to you.
- Please note that we do not assess academic requirements until we have received all the necessary documentation.
- Only upload what is required. Unrequested documents will not be taken into consideration and only delay the evaluation of your application. It is the applicant's responsibility to upload all required documents within the deadline. Incomplete applications will be rejected regardless of academic qualifications.
- Only upload official documents. Student copy/unofficial transcripts are not considered official.
- All documentation must be uploaded as PDF-files or JPG-files. We do not accept documents via e-mail unless explicitly requested by us. It is preferred that documents consisting of several pages are scanned together into one PDF-file.
- Submission of fraudulent documents is illegal and will be reported to the appropriate authorities.
- You may be asked to submit your original documents at the start of your first semester at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences, for a routine inspection. It is therefore expected that you bring your original documentation to Norway. Students that can't present approved documentation may lose their right to study at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences.
