The Ives Project

  • Project period: 2022 - 2024
  • Category: Basic Research

Description

The project is a historical investigation into the inspiration behind the world's first RCT experiment, conducted by James Lind in the 1747. Here, Lind uses oranges and lemons as a cure for scurcy, but little attention has been given to why he chose this treatment to begin with. His book refers to a journal excerpt from a "Mr. Ives", who first noticed that oranges reduced scurvy symptoms. The Ives Project is an investigation into this person (now identified as Edward Ives) and the journey towards finding a cure for scurvy on his voyage on HMS Dragon. Just as Lind's experiment is - arguably - the world's first RCT experiment, Ives' journey is arguably the background for this experiment, and thus the justification for the hypothesis.
