Professor Stephen Quinn's career has always combined theory and practice: He has worked as both a media academic and a journalist. Each informs the other.

From 1975 to 1995 Dr Quinn was a journalist in Australia, Thailand, the UK and New Zealand, working for some of the world’s best-regarded media companies such as the BBC, TVNZ and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Between 1996 and 2011 Dr Quinn was a university researcher / teacher / administrator in Australia, the UAE, the USA and China.

In 2011 he returned to journalism in Hong Kong with the South China Morning Post. He moved to the UK in late 2013 where he maintains links with universities and continue to teach part time in Norway while working as a freelance writer and video maker. 

Since 1997 Dr Quinn has published 21 academic (printed) books, four iBooks, three training manuals, a novel and a book of poetry as well as 33 refereed journal articles and 23 book chapters. His industry links are global: Since 1996 he has given almost 200 presentations at academic and industry conferences in 38 countries, more than half as keynote or invited speaker.

Since 2010 he has run courses for media companies and universities about his specialisation, mobile phone video-making (mojo), in 19 countries.

Dr Quinn also writes screenplays and magazine articles about wine. He has won prizes for his screenplays. Professor Quinn has three adult children.
